JOKER FROM THE DROP

"My name is Christian Taylor McLachlan. I am 18 years old and a part of the Youth Outreach & Empowerment Team's Youth Advisory Council in Surrey.

As an individual, I run both a Facebook page and Instagram where I help people in a variety of communities connect to the resources they need and/or if they desire a listening ear. I grew up in and out of jail, running away from home, opting to be homeless, spent time dabbling with heroin and for many years was not a good person. I eventually came to a point of realization that it was not benefiting me. I wanted to be better.

I gained knowledge of local resources from a drop in for youth known as The Hip Hop Drop and from there I expanded my connections from South Delta to as far as Dawson Creek. I build connections with resources and people in general everyday life and I try to visit the people I support often in their respective communities. Sometimes I'm in Surrey or Vancouver; others, I'm in Port Coquitlam or Chilliwack. Depending on who needs support, I'm all around. That's a brief summary of who I am and what I do." -Christian

Resources for LGBTQ+ community are essential for their health. Mental health issue rates are higher in the LGBTQ+ community due to discrimination, lack of resources and hate. Children spend most of their lives in school so it's extremely important for schools to be educated and recognize discrimination (book https://outinschools.com/). You can help by donating or volunteering with LGBTQ+ organizations such as Qmunity or Vancouver Pride.
